About the
Minor
The African Studies Minor is primarily designed for students who plan to live and work in Africa or who are interested in government and public service careers involving African Affairs and/or students who plan to pursue graduate work in the field of African Studies. The philosophy of the Minor is that people with a solid background in one of the established disciplines can make the best contribution to an understanding of Africa and its problems.
This is an interdepartmental degree offered through the UCLA International Institute, a division of the College, and one of the world’s preeminent centers of international education. Interdepartmental degrees offered through the International Institute allow students to focus on a particular area of study – either a specific geographical area, or a global comparative and issue-oriented approach – through a variety of disciplines. The flexibility and individualized nature of these interdisciplinary programs enables our students to design a course of study that meets their specific interests. The Minor is available to students working towards a Bachelor’s Degree, normally in one of the following fields: Anthropology, Economics, Geography, History, Linguistics, Political Science, or Sociology. Students completing this program will receive a B.A. degree combining a major in a selected discipline with a Minor in African Studies.
